Business Operations

At Bona Venture Stables, we offer distinct advantages to a new owner. We are a small stable operation. Our goal is to purchase a couple 2 year-olds and yearlings each year, while maintaining a total stable of about 15 horses. This allows us to have a first-name relationship will all investors and for everyone to be able to experience first-hand the horse ownership opportunity.

Bona Venture Stables management spends hundreds of hours each year thoroughly reviewing more than 2,000 2 year-olds and yearlings offered for sale at auctions in New York, Kentucky and Florida. We begin two months prior to each sale, reviewing pedigree listings, creating a target list of between 100 and 200 horses for personal review/inspection. From here, we watch videotapes of gallops; attend early morning workouts to analyze the running styles, listen to breathing patterns to identify potential problems and inspect medical records, all prior to the actual sale.

Bona Venture Stables or our agents attends both the Ocala winter sale and the Fasig-Tipton August sale in Saratoga to witness workouts, inspect potential purchases and lead the sales purchase at auction. We employ the use of a bloodstock agents and trainers to analyze our target/final list of between 50 and 100 horses at each auction.

After a 2 year-old is purchased it receives early education and training by either Steve Venosa’s (SLV Thoroughbreds) stable at the Eclipse Training Center in Ocala, Florida, or Dave Markgraf’s Bittersweet Farm in Citra, Florida.
