Class of 2022

Surprise Payoff 2-Year-Old Colt

"He checked all our priorities: an impressive athlete by a major stakes winner, himself a first-time sire; near perfect conformation with a long, languid stride; pedigree demonstrating an ability to run at the classic distances; and our trainer's enthusiastic recommendation."

Sitting comfortably on an Amtrak train headed to Saratoga Springs back on March 30, George Weaver (trainer) called me. He was at the premier one-day Fasig-Tipton 2 year-olds in training sale at Gulfstream Park. I could hear excitement in George's voice. "Dan, there is this colt at the sale. He just RNA'd (reserve price not attained). You need to buy this horse. I need this horse in my barn!" George declared. I don't recall ever hearing the normally taciturn George speak with such urgency. The horse in question is a Kentucky bred colt by Ransom the Moon, a first-time sire whose foals are 2-year-olds of 2022. Ransom the Moon is the son of deceased Malibu Moon who sired 51 graded stakes winners and is recognized as the most influential stud in the 21st century. Ransom the Moon was a multiple Grade 1 stakes winner on the West coast. Our bloodstock advisor/agent Steve Venosa was also excited with the colt's athleticism, pointing out they digitally measured his heart and stride length and came away impressed. So we negotiated a sale price and now have a classic-quality runner in the stable. Now named Surprise Payoff, he sparkled with a 10 second flat eighth of a mile breeze, galloping out strongly. He is training at George Weaver's Palm Beach Downs facility, and will head to George's Saratoga barn in mid-May and prepare to debut at Saratoga later this summer.

Sail With the Wind 2-Year-Old Filly

"Look at that hind quarter. She's a true turf runner. I'd love to ride her if I was still racing." ~ Retired Hall of Fame jockey Ramon Dominguez

Considered an extraordinary 'value' purchase Bona Venture Stables took advantage of a pre-sale yearling showing last fall to pick up Sail With the Wind, now a 2 year-old, she's the daughter of Astern, a former multiple graded stakes turf sprint winner in Australia. There is deep turf success in both the mare and sire's pedigree. Astern is the fastest son of Medaglia D'Oro, an eight time graded stakes winner including the Travers Stakes and a two time Breeders' Classic champion. Among Medaglia D'Oro's successful runners are Rachel Alexandra, Wonder Gadot, Songbird, Vancouver, and Mshawish. Astern's first crop of North American runners (2021) impressed on both dirt and turf with early stakes success. His second crop are 2 year-olds this season. Sail With the Wind is a strikingly well conformed filly with an impressive muscular back end. She has been training for several months at Belmont Park and could be ready for early 2YO racing in Belmont's summer meet, prior to the premier meet at Saratoga starting mid-July. She is Breeders' Cup nominated and New York bred eligible for restricted stakes and the lucrative New York incentive purses.

Lady Fortuna 2-Year-Old Filly

"Every sale seems to have an under-appreciated 'bargain' and I think we found her in Lady Fortuna. She has all the makings of a solid performer as a daughter of Accelerate, a champion in his own right." ~ Leah Gyarmati (Trainer)

Lady luck certainly smiled at Bona Venture Stables during the March OBS 2 year-old in training sale this year. We brought home a stunning, athletic filly by first-time sire and former champion Accelerate. His first foals are 2 year-olds of 2022. Named Lady Fortuna, her pedigree shouts dirt with the ability to win at the classic distances. She caught our eye at the pre-sale exhibiting a long, athletic walk, strong neck, holding her head high and telling us she was the one. Her sales breeze revealed an easy going, free flowing stride, moving easily over the dirt surface. She has championship performance all through her pedigree. The daughter of Accelerate, he won 21 of 23 races in a four year race career, earning more than $6 million and 10 black type stakes races, including the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic, TVG Pacific Classic, Santa Anita Handicap, Gold Cup, and Pegasus World Cup Invitational. Accelerate is by Lookin At Lucky, himself a nine time stakes winner. On the dam's side - Solar Vortex is by Orb, the 2013 Kentucky Derby winner. Our filly worked a solid 10.3 eighth of a mile at the sale, without effort. She's already settled in at Belmont Park and is being targeted to debut this summer at Saratoga. A registered New York bred (eligible for NY restricted stakes and purse incentives) and nominated for the Breeders' Cup is trained by Leah Gyarmati.
